My first fandom was The Monkees. When I was 6, our family got one of those pieces of furniture called a stereo console that was big as a couch and contained built-in speakers, a vinyl record player, radio, and an 8-track player. And since we got ours used, we also received two Monkees albums. I loved all four of the guys: Broadway dancer Davy, R&B singer Mickey, country songwriter Michael, and folk musician Peter. What a great mix. Years later, the Monkees' TV show was brought out of the archives and aired on MTV. They were reaching a new generation, so they went on tour. One day, a group of us were sitting around and whoever was reading the paper said the Monkees were going to be in South Georgia that night. We decided to go. This was before google maps or smartphones, so the trip down was a story in itself, where two cars took different routes and one wound up stranded on a railroad track. Thankfully, the one I was in made it to the venue. But the show was over! And someone suggested we drive around and see if we could see them getting on their buses. We did. Well, one of them. There was Davy and he was so gracious. "You missed the show?!" he said, as we frantically spilled out details of our trip. We did get a picture and autographs but here's why you're not seeing them. More recently some friends went to a garage sale at Davy's house because they lived in the same Pennsylvania town. My friends got me an autographed picture and sent it. That was not long before he died. They said he was planning to open a Monkees museum there. What was your first fandom?
